Cell Phones? Do we need to be that connected?

October 12, 2005

Don't get me wrong, I think the cellular phone was a great invention, I even own stock in several of the companies, but do we really need to be that connected?

This morning while driving into work, a person came to a complete stop at a green light. Not a yellow, not a red, but green. And it wasn't like the light had just turned green either. I was quite confused at first, but as I honked a few times and then pulled around, I realized the person was on the phone. Now who knows what she was talking about, but I can't imagine it was so important that the conversation had to be going on while she was driving.

At lunch time in the restaurant parking lot, I was waiting for a car to back out of its spot so that I could pull in and suddenly the car stopped. It started to back out some more, and then stopped again. At first I thought perhaps it was someone with limited driving skills, but instead it was a middle-aged man trying to dial a phone number while backing out. Again I ask, what is so important that you can't wait to back up and get going to make your phone call, or even to make your phone call while in the car.

So while you ponder over whether or not we should be so connected, be sure to ponder at your desk and not while driving. And for heaven's sake, don't get on the phone as soon as you get in your car.
